Derek Besgrove Oregon Ohio Obituary and Accident

Derek Besgrove of Oregon, Ohio, has sadly passed away, leaving behind a heartbroken family, community, and countless friends whose lives he touched with his unwavering spirit and compassion.

Derek was a devoted husband to Erin Besgrove, who survives him. He was known not only as a loving partner and father but also as a mentor, coach, and a beloved friend whose presence made every room brighter.

Professionally, Derek served as a Senior Process Safety Advisor at Cenovus Toledo Refinery, where he was also a USW Process Safety Management Representative. He previously worked at BP America for 17 years, where he wore many hats—Refinery Operator, Firefighter/EMT, and USW Process Safety Management Rep. His dedication to workplace safety and community protection was unparalleled.

Derek‘s educational journey took him from Clay High School, where he graduated in 2000, to Walsh University, where he studied Criminal Justice and Sociology while playing both football and track & field. He was known on the field as a powerhouse—a record-breaking athlete who held the all-time NAIA rushing record and inspired teammates with his relentless drive.

More than his titles or achievements, Derek will be remembered for the way he lived—with joy, humility, and a heart open to everyone.

Amber Poling Echelberry described him as “an incredible son, husband, father, coach, and friend” who gave his heart to everything he did. “He leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and impact that will live on through all those he touched.”

Former college teammate Brandon Foster shared heartfelt memories, recalling Derek’s light during dark times and calling him “a beast on the field… a freak athlete… and someone I was truly blessed to play with, train with, and know.” Foster continued, “He was my brother — on and off the field.”

Family friend Erin Lachey remembered a conversation her father had with Derek at a polling station—a moment that captured who Derek was: humble, proud, and endlessly kind. “He never met someone who wasn’t a friend,” she said. “He was Proud. He was a Husband, Father, Son, Brother, Uncle, Coach, and FRIEND to so many.”

Derek Besgrove embodied what it meant to live life to the max. His unexpected passing is a devastating loss to all who knew him, but his memory will remain alive in every life he lifted, every player he coached, and every heart he touched.

He will be forever missed, but never forgotten.

#44 — Rest in Heaven, Derek.
